An Introduction to the Adelaide Rowing Club

 1stgrade_2.jpg

The Adelaide Rowing Club is South Australia's premier rowing club. With over 150 actively participating members, it is also the largest rowing club in South Australia.

Affectionately known as ARC, the Club caters for rowers from a wide range of ages from 15 up to 75 and over, at varying levels of intensity and competition.

Formed in 1882 on the banks of the River Torrensas the I'Zingari Rowing Club, the Club has had a rich and colourful past over its 126 year life-span. The Club's current boatshed on the River Torrens is the third edition, after the first and second sheds were destroyed by flood in 1889 and fire in 1931 respectively.

The Club operates from 2 facilities: the Torrens Lake boathouse and clubrooms, and a bay at the extensive South Australian Rowing Association (SARA) complex at West Lakes.

ARC has an extensive fleet of some 26 rowing and sculling boats spread over both locations, including coxed eights through to single sculls, as well as caring for the Seymour College fleet.

ARC - Men's Premiers Again

Adelaide Rowing Club was yet again announced as SARA Men's Premiers for the 5th consecutive year at the SARA Awards night on the 12th of June.

The ARC men might as well have been in a separate league of their own as they opened a 26 point gap back to 2nd placed Murray Bridge.

ARC also received its fair share of individual awards, with Aleco Mitriopoulous announced as the State's most successful coxswain, and Jarrad Schar named as the most successful senior male rower, with his pair partner, Tom Hodkinson, as the runner-up.

ARC Dominates SA Youth Cup Teams

Several ARC rowers and coxswains have been selected in the SA Team to contest July's Australian Youth Cup regatta for U/21 rowers in Penrith.

Yet again, ARC rowers comprised the bulk of the Men's team, with Owen Girardi, Max Tonkin & Imre Zambo were selected in the crew, with Aleco Mitriopolous selected as Coxswain, and Will McNamara as the crew's reserve.

Mieka Webb fills 1 of the 2 lightweight positions in the strong Women's squad, with Catherine 'CJ' Macks making her state team debut with the strings.

In addition, ARC's Co-Captain, and all-round good guy, Jarrad Schar, will make his state team coaching debut (after several years as a rower in the team, including as a member of the victorious 2005 Men's Youth Eight) as coach of the Women's Squad.

Coudraye Selected For Aussie Men's Eight

ARC's Bryn Coudraye was selected in the Australian Men's Eight to contest the Senior World Championships in Poznan, Poland, in August.

Bryn's selection follows a week of selection trials at the Sydney International Regatta Centre and comes after his first season training in Canberra as an AIS Scholarship holder. This is Bryn's first time in the Senior Australian team, following several years competing for Australia at Under 23 level. The crew will be coached by Oarsome Foursome coach, Noel Donaldson, in Canberra.

Bryn is ARC's first representative in the Senior National Team in 4 years, following Trent Collins's selection in the Men's Quad for the 2005 World Championships in Japan. Additionally, it is over 20 years since ARC last had a member compete in the blue-riband Men's Eight event for Australia.

In addition to Bryn, ARC's Zoltan Shepherd was selected as coach of the Under 23 Men's Quad Scull, making this his 6 consecutive season coaching a national team.

A total of 8 South Australian rowers and 3 coaches were selected in National teams for 2009. Read on for the full list.
